Kharrazi Calls Annan, Primakow, Moussa, Al-Maguid on Iraqi Crisis

TEHRAN Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi Wednesday night encouraged UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to visit Iraq in order to find a diplomatic solution to Iraqi crisis. In a telephone conversation, Kharrazi and Annan discussed latest developments in Iraq. Kharrazi said that Annan's visit to Iraq can produce very fruitful results and expressed hope that Annan would be able to find a practical diplomatic solution to the current crisis to prevent use of force.
The two sides stressed the necessity of implementing the UN Security Council resolutions by Iraq. Iran as the chairman of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has made extensive diplomatic attempts to find political solution for implementation of UN resolutions. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov on Thursday exchanged views on the phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi on the latest diplomatic efforts to help resolve Iraqi crisis.
Primakov appreciated Kharrazi's phone call to the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan encouraging the secretary general to visit Baghdad and Iran's diplomatic efforts to help strengthen diplomatic solution to the Iraqi crisis. Kharrazi renewed Iran's support to the secretary general's visit to Baghdad and expressed hope that the visit would take place soon. Kharrazi stressed the need for implementation of the United Nations resolutions without use of force.
Primakov said Russian Federation, France and China support the UN chief's visit to Baghdad and hoped that the states effective in strengthening political solution to the crisis including the Islamic Republic of Iran would hold a meeting to promote the political option. Meanwhile, foreign ministers of Iran and Egypt reviewed latest developments related to the Iraq-UN disputes in their telephone conversation Wednesday. Kamal Kharrazi and Amr Moussa in their talks also reviewed Russian and French political initiatives on continuation of the inspection of sites of the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq by the United Nations' inspection team.
The two sides stressed the need for a continued diplomatic efforts in order to defuse the current crisis so that the United States military attack could be averted. The Egyptian and Iranian foreign ministers underlined the need for the observation and implementation of the United Nations' Security Council resolution by Iraqi government.
